Mrs. Irene Fischer, 93, Altoona, died Friday morning at Altoona Center for Nursing Care after an extended illness. She was born in Altoona, daughter of the late Kenneth L. and Gladys J. (Kinney) Gable. On Sept. 10,
1946, she married Donald Martin Fischer at the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament. He preceded her in death Jan. 29, 2006.
She retired in 1992 as a clerk at Hills Department Store, Altoona, with 15 years of service.
She attended St. Therese of the Child Jesus Catholic Church, Altoona.
Irene was a 1945 graduate of Altoona High School. She enjoyed sewing, gardening, arts and crafts.
Irene is survived by four children: Mary A. Lumadue, and Donald M. (Bette) Fischer Jr., both of Altoona, Patricia J. (Jim) Stoy of Fredericksburg, Va., and David Russell (Linda) Fischer, of Altoona; a sister, Laura Estock of New Castle; a half-brother, Robert Rehrer of Ashville, N.C., a half-sister, Nancy Gable of Imler, a half-brother, William Gable of Bedford, and a half-brother, Carl Rehrer of Fayetteville, N.C. Irene is survived by 10 grandchildren: Kellie (Brian) Ianuzzi, Kristine (Brian) Schneider, Angela (James) Wayland, Peter (Sheena) Fischer, Heather (Cullen Cassidy) Miller-Grant, Kimberly Miller, Christopher Fischer, Nicholas Fischer, Aubrey Stoy and Austin Stoy; 11 great-grandchildren: Sydney Johnson, Brian Schneider, Allison Fischer, Hunter Wayland, Heidi Wayland, Kaila Burgess, Kyle Grant, Caden Cassidy, Dominic Ianuzzi, Adelia Ianuzzi and Morgan Stasko; and three great-great-grandchildren: Olivia Schneider, Ryland Embry and Abigail Embry. She was preceded in death by a brother, Kenneth Gable; stepsister, Madeline Garman; and half-brothers: Robert Gable, James Gable, John Gable and William Rehrer.
At Irene’s request, there will be no visitation or services.
Arrangements are by Jones Funeral Home, Altoona.
