Mr. John J. "Jack" Nagle, 97, of Altoona died at 2:30 p.m., Saturday, July 16, 2016 at his residence, after an extended illness.
Mr. Nagle was born in Altoona on April 12, 1919, son of the late Donnelly J. and Ailce E. (Trindel) Nagle. He married Marion B. Bender on October 14, 1939 at the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament, Altoona. She died May 30, 1993.
He retired as owner of Cresson Ridge Diesel Garage, Cresson, PA. He was the previous owner of Penn Coal Company, Nagle Brothers Coal Company, Buckhorn Truck Salvage and Nagle Brothers Strip Mining Company.
He was of the Catholic faith.
He was a member of the Heidelberg Country Club, UVA Club, Bavarian Aid Society and Newburg Volunteer Fire Association. He enjoyed spending time with his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Jack also enjoyed the Pittsburgh Steelers, hunting, and trips to Las Vegas and Atlantic City.
He served in the U.S. Marines during WWII attaining the rank of Corporal and he particpated in the assault and capture of Iwo Jima, Volcano lslands in the Pacific.
He is survived by four children, Barbara A. Nagle, Linda M. "Pork" Pletcher, John F. Nagle, and Mike J. (Nancy) Nagle, all of Altoona. John is also survived by five grandchildren, Robert T. Pletcher, Todd (Rachel) Pletcher, Mike (Jill) Nagle, Michele (Corey) Homan and Stephen (Nicole) Nagle and eight great grandchildren, Ashley Pletcher, Landon Pletcher, Logan Pletcher, Cameron Nagle, Caden Nagle, Caroline Nagle, Christian Nagle and Brody Nagle. John was the last of his immediate family and was preceded in death by an infant son John Nagle and four brothers, Thomas, Robert, James, and Benjamin Nagle.
A Funeral Service Outside of Mass will be held at 10:00 AM Wednesday, July 20, 2016 at Jones Funeral Home, Altoona with Fr. Raymond Crosser officiating.
Committal Rites will be held at St. Mary's Cemetery, Hollidaysburg, PA.
Friends will be received from 2 - 7 PM Tuesday, July 19, 2016 at Jones Funeral Home.
Military honors will be provided by the Blair County Veterans Honor Guard. A Memorial contributions may be made to Blair County Veterans Honor Guard P.O. Box 114 Dancansville, Pa 16635.
