Karen (Wachter) Hazlett

Karen M. (Wachter) Hazlett, 56 of Charlottesville, VA formerly of Altoona passed away Sunday, August 25, 2019 at her residence.

Mrs. Hazlett was born in Heidelberg, Germany on January 24, 1963, daughter of U.S. ARMY veteran Leo J. Wachter Jr. and Barbara J. Fischer both Altoona natives.

Karen grew up in Altoona where she began her education at Sacred Heart Elementary School. She excelled in her studies and was a 1981 honors graduate of Bishop Guilfoyle High School. Her commitment to education culminated in 1985 honors graduation at St. Mary’s College in South Bend, Indiana with a Bachelors Degree in Social Work. Karen advance early in her career to the Director of Social Services at Valley View Nursing Home in Altoona. While she excelled in her professional career, she ultimately derived the most satisfaction from her role as mother and homemaker.

Karen is survived by her parents of Charlottesville, VA her 3 beloved children Ryan M., Laura E. and Caroline K. Hazlett all of Richmond, VA, a brother Brian T. (Rani) Wachter of Williamsburg, VA and a sister Krista A. (Robert) Rahm of Louisa, VA and former husband Jeffery F. Hazlett. Karen is also survived by 4 nieces & nephews Dylan (Skyler) Rahm, Shanah Rahm, Daniel C. and Julia Wachter. Karen passions included family, friends, running, piano and literature her poetry was published in the National Library of Poetry and Story Book Home. She was also a founding member of the Verneda A. & Leo J. Wachter Sr. Foundation which provided college scholarships and supported charities in Pennsylvania.

There will be no public visitation.

Family and friends are invited to attend a Funeral Mass Saturday, August 31, 2019 at 10:30 AM at Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament. Committal Rites will be at St. John’s Cemetery, Altoona, Pa.
