Paul J. Mercer, 90, of Altoona, died Tuesday evening at UPMC Altoona, due to complications of COVID-19. He was born in Altoona, son of the late VanEman E. and Ruth (Bohn) Mercer. He married Anna M. Kneidinger on Sept. 26, 1953, at the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament, Altoona. She preceded him in death Feb16,2017.
Surviving are five children: Cynthia A. Mercer, Richard P. Mercer, Kathleen L. (Kenneth) Bollinger, Michael J. (Cindy) Mercer, all of Altoona, and Joseph P. (Kim) Mercer, of Duncansville; nine grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
Paul was preceded in death by six siblings: Florence Cooper, Elizabeth Shannon, Thomas Mercer, Eileen Humphries, Michael Mercer and Joseph Mercer.
He was a member of the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament, Altoona. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. In 1991, he retired from Conrail Altoona as a laborer, with 45 years of service. He enjoyed bowling.
There will be no public visitation. Friends and family are invited to attend a funeral Mass to be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday,
Dec. 30, 2020, at the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament, with Monsignor Stanley B. Carson officiating. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, social distancing and masks are required.
Committal Rites will be held at Calvary Cemetery, Altoona.
Arrangements are by Jones Funeral Home, Altoona.
